The Story of Lamborghini

Lamborghini - The Raging Bull

How sinister do these cars look? The Murcielago, Diablo, Aventador and don't forget the Huracán.

They look like absolute speed demons. However, there's some truth behind that because Lamborghini blend speed and design to provide you with a driving experience worthy of their name.

They even upped the ante and moved into the SUV market with the URUS. With ambitions to create a Super-SUV, 0-62mph in 3.6s might be enough to take them there.

The vision behind the company came from Ferruccio Lamborghini who originally produced and sold tractors.

After accumulating wealth, he collected an enviable collection of cars such as Maserati, Mercedes and Ferrari. However, it was his relationship with Ferrari which transformed his ambitions and began a rivalry which still exists today.

Ferruccio vs Il Commendatore

As you know, Ferrari and Lamborghini share a rivalry as they both make very fast cars. The founders also met but it only inspired a surprised Ferruccio.

As you read earlier, Ferruccio had an enviable car collection but he experienced recurring problems with Ferrari and was in and out of the garage with clutch problems.

After one time was too many, he took his problem to the top. That is to say, he approached Il Commendatore himself.

“Lamborghini, you may be able to drive a tractor, but you will never be able to handle a Ferrari Properly.”  - Enzo Ferrari.

Surprised by Enzo's response, Ferruccio decided to take matters into his own hands and build his own car.

What Was The First Lamborghini?

The first Lamborghini was the 350 GT and what a statement that was!

The story is even better. Ferruccio knew what he wanted and to fulfil his ambition, he built a state-of-the-art factory in Bologna, hired Giotto Bizzarrini to create the finest V12 engine and also two aspiring designers to head the technical department.

With only months to complete the car, it all came together like a fairy tale. At the 1963 Turin Auto Show, a prototype 350 GTV was presented to great fanfare. However, buyers had to wait a year for the 350 GT and it was an instant success.

Famous Lamborghini Cars

Lamborghini has experienced every emotion during their meteoric rise to the pinnacle of vehicle performance. Check out the cars which helped take them there!

Lamborghini Muira

An icon among the Lamborghini family, the Miura is named after a bull. It's not your average raging bull, it's the strongest and smartest of them all.

What's fascinating about the Miura was how sceptical Ferruccio was. He approved the design to prove a lesson but this backfired massively but still in his favour!

His young designers have conceived this radical new chassis to create a near untameable racing car on the road.

Debuting an experimental prototype at the 1965 Turin Auto Show, the hastily assembled chassis caught the attention of Nuccio Bertone who envisioned a new car and joined Lamborghini to make it real.

With just one year before the next show, Lamborghini was in a race against time to ready the car. Working around the clock, they made this miracle happen and the Muira was born.

A central V12 engine, elegant design and an industry-leading top speed of around 170mph, the Miura flipped the concept of what a supercar was or should be.

Lamborghini Countach

The Miura was a legend and Lamborghini followed up with an updated version. During the show, it didn't get the attention expected, in fact, barely any.

The Countach became the talk of the show. A monster 4L V12 engine adorned this car which looked a bit like an '80s space car but nonetheless, it became an iconic car.

Incredibly sleek and capable of over 190mph, it's a fantastic fusion of performance and eccentric design.

Another masterstroke by Lamborghini? Perhaps but it didn't stop a period of turmoil. Lamborghini was sliding towards bankruptcy and this was illustrated when they produced 237 cars between 1978 and 82.

Lamborghini Diablo

Under new direction, they were able to continue producing new cars such as the Urracco and the Jalpa.

However, it was the Diablo which reaffirmed Lamborghini's position at the top of the car market. It looks like a rocket and had the speed to match!

A 5.7L V12 was used and generated 492 bhp. It became the first Lamborghini to break the 200mph speed barrier too!

Now owned by Chrysler, Lamborghini changed hands in 1994 which threw another cloud of darkness over the car maker.

Lamborghini Murciélago

When Audi purchased Lamborghini, the first car to come out of this era was the Murciélago and what a bullet that was!

Part of the same lineage as the Miura and the Countach, the Murciélago needed to push boundaries like its ancestors.

Taking performance to new levels, it boasted 580hp and a top speed of over 200mph. This car also inspired the likes of the ever popular Gallardo.

It heralded a new era for Lamborghini and set the tone for future trailblazers like the Aventador who joined this famous family line.

Lamborghini Today

The story of Lamborghini is full of every emotion.

Ferruccio Lamborghini had the idea to challenge Ferrari from the outset and was considered insane.

However, he has proved that passion and desire can create one of the greatest automotive stories out there.

The raging bulls have never backed down from a challenge and altered our notions of what sports, super and hypercars should be with an array of icons such as the Countach, Miura, Murciélago and more!

This passion has trickled down to Lamborghini's biggest fans who took their favourite parts of past Lamborghinis and created a potent fusion.
